At a gala ceremony held at the Event Center – Paradise Mall, the building of the Clean&Circle Competence Center of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” received the prestigious award “Building of the Year – 2025” in the category “Green Buildings – SCIENCE.” The ceremony was attended by representatives of the investor, including the Vice-Rector of Sofia University, Academician Toni Spassov; the Project Coordinator of the project financed under OP Science and Education for Smart Growth – Prof. Yana Topalova; the building’s designer, Architect Borislav Bogdanov from Amphion Ltd.; the contractor, Stroitel Ltd., represented by Nikolay Nikolov; and the Coordinator of the Competence Center under the National Programme for Research, Innovation and Digitalization in Intelligent Industry and Technologies – Assoc. Prof. Ivaylo Yotinov.

Three statuettes were presented – to the investor, the designer, and the contractor. The elegant statuette is a stylized artistic figure, made of metal, glass, or a combination of materials. Its design is abstract, conveying the idea of a building, verticality, stability, and innovation. It bears the engraved logo of the competition, the year, and the category.

The Clean&Circle building is the first BUILDING–ECOLOGICAL LABORATORY in Bulgaria. Its functional and ecological elements, which promote the green transition and the circular economy in the field of higher education and advanced scientific research, include: an on-site reservoir for the collection, study, and reuse of rainwater; separation of wastewater into different streams for domestic wastewater and laboratory water, enabling the installation of pilot treatment plants for student training and scientific research. These represent the most up-to-date trends in “learning in a real environment for specialists in water treatment, water resource management, and circular technologies.”

Special attention deserves the modern façade, which ensures comfort for those working in the building through energy-saving elements that adapt to heat transfer from outside to inside and from inside to outside. The building is also equipped with its own electric vehicle charging station.

The creators of the building were congratulated by the Mayor of Lozenets District, by the Rector of the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Assoc. Prof. Gichka Kutova, and by many other officials attending the ceremony.
