Clean&Circle - University of Forestry with New Laboratories

The University of Forestry has completed the equipment of two laboratories, where it develops educational, research, and diagnostic activities.

LABORATORY FOR SOLID WASTE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES

Activities

Educational: Practical training of students majoring in "Ecology and Environmental Protection". Training and conducting scientific research for graduates in the scientific specialty "Ecology and Environmental Protection" and for PhD students in the scientific specialty "Ecology and Ecosystem Protection".

Research: Conducting research and analyses under scientific and applied projects in waste treatment technologies. Studies on compost production enriched with macro- and microelements. Research on the possibility of utilizing certain wastes for the purpose of adding nutritional macro- and microelements into compost. Research on the possibility of recycling composite wastes. Research on the processing of wastewater treatment plant sludge and its use as a resource. The laboratory equipment is provided under project BG05M2OP001-1.002-0019: "Clean Technologies for Sustainable Environment – Water, Waste, Energy for Circular Economy", financed by the Operational Programme "Science and Education for Smart Growth", co-financed by the European Union through the European Structural and Investment Funds.

Diagnostic: Examination of production processes and company activities aiming to implement circular economy practices. Consultations and expertise in the field of waste treatment technologies.

LABORATORY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, RESTORATION AND ECOLOGICAL MONITORING

Activities

Research: Conducting research and analyses under scientific and applied projects related to monitoring certain environmental components (atmospheric air, soils, and plants). Measuring concentrations of nitrogen oxides, ozone, and PM10; studying nutrient and heavy metal content in plant samples; determining pigments in plant samples; research on substrates from disturbed sites caused by extraction activities, etc. The laboratory equipment has been provided under various projects – "Assessment and monitoring of the impact of polluted air on forest ecosystems" – provided by the Executive Environment Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Water, as well as projects funded by the Research Fund of the University of Forestry. The equipment for measuring atmospheric pollutants, obtained in 2020, is provided under project BG05M2OP001-1.002-0019: "Clean Technologies for Sustainable Environment – Water, Waste, Energy for Circular Economy", financed by the Operational Programme "Science and Education for Smart Growth", co-financed by the European Union through the European Structural and Investment Funds.

Diagnostic: Consultations and expertise in the field of air quality monitoring, forest monitoring, and reclamation of disturbed lands.
