It is well known that Bulgaria is a country rich in mineral springs, and its development as a balneological center is of key importance for business and for the growth of the country’s regions. The properties of the mineral waters in Velingrad Municipality and the study of their active substances have become the subject of joint work between the research team of the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry at BAS, a partner of the Center of Competence Clean & Circle, and Velingrad Municipality.
In February, 9 cooperation agreements were signed and the first samples were taken from nine different springs located in the territory of Velingrad Municipality and the village of Draginovo. The upcoming research will be carried out using state-of-the-art equipment purchased with funds from the Operational Programme “Science and Education for Smart Growth” and will allow for an in-depth analysis of the healing properties of the mineral springs. At the same time, new health products are being developed, making use of the beneficial qualities of the local waters.
The studies are expected to determine the possibilities and conditions under which mineral water can be fully utilized in tourism, balneology and rehabilitation, in pharmacy, as well as in agriculture and the food industry.
The team is led by Prof. Pavlina Dolashka (IOCCP-BAS) and includes the scientists: Prof. Narczislav Petrov, Assoc. Prof. Ivanka Stoycheva, Assoc. Prof. Lyudmila Velkova, Assoc. Prof. Aleksandar Dolashki, Petar Petrov, and Karina Marinova.
