Project

“Clean technologies for sustainable environment – waters, waste, energy for circular economy“ (Clean&Circle) for creation and development of a Centre of Competence

On the last day of February, the final concrete slab of the newest building in the “Lozenets” campus was poured. In keeping with good construction traditions, the coordinator of the Centre of Competence Clean&Circle – Prof. DSc Yana Topalova, together with the construction site manager of the new building, Eng. Sashko Ivanov, raised the Bulgarian national flag at the highest point of the site.

The silhouette of the building is now complete, featuring four above-ground floors and one underground level. It will house modern laboratory complexes for water, waste, clean energy, innovative techniques for chemical and molecular diagnostics, and the creation of eco- and biotechnologies aimed at achieving the goals of the circular economy and bioeconomy.

The home of Clean&Circle has been designed with specific ecological features that will enable it to function as a building–ecological laboratory. On the underground level, plasma sources and equipment will be installed for the development of plasma technologies for innovative treatment of toxic pollutants and pathogens. The laboratories will be equipped with next-generation instruments worth more than 11 million BGN.

“I am confident that February 28 will remain an important date for Clean&Circle, as well as for Sofia University as a whole. Today marks the beginning of the modern joint university and scientific centre for clean technologies in Bulgaria and the Balkans. This will inspire the researchers working at the Centre of Competence to reach a world-class level.” – said Prof. DSc Yana Topalova during the ceremony.

The project for the building was developed by the architectural studio “Amphion,” the construction was carried out by the company “Stroitel,” and supervision is being provided by “VML Consult.” The building is located in the space between three faculties of Sofia University – the Faculty of Physics, the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, and the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. Work is still underway on the façade and the building’s interior.
