“Clean technologies for sustainable environment – waters, waste, energy for circular economy“ (Clean&Circle) for creation and development of a Centre of Competence

World Environment Day, which in 2022 was held under the motto “Only One Planet,” was celebrated with a festive event at the University of Forestry (UF), the university announced.

The event was organized under the project for establishing the Center of Competence “Clean & Circle” and was officially opened by the Rector of UF, Corr. Member Prof. DSc Ivan Iliev. In his address, Prof. Iliev emphasized the importance of this day in raising public, scientific, and business awareness about environmental protection, as well as the crucial role of environmental education for the future of our planet.

Collaboration and a holistic approach to solving environmental issues are key objectives of the “Clean & Circle” Competence Center, in which UF is a partner. The event brought together students, researchers, representatives of business, and state administration. Prof. Dr. Yana Topalova – project coordinator – highlighted the role of the clean technologies developed within “Clean & Circle” and the application of circular economy principles in protecting natural resources. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekaterina Todorova – leading researcher of the project from UF – presented the achievements and partnerships of the university, which have been stimulated and financially supported by the project.

Representatives of business and associated partners of the Center – such as the Energy Agency of Plovdiv, the Municipal Enterprise “Sofia Waste Treatment Plant”, Sofiyska Voda AD, and others – focused in their presentations on joint achievements and opportunities for new projects with the “Clean & Circle” teams aimed at developing and managing clean technologies, as well as on best practices in research and business for achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals.

The role of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW – Sofia) was presented by Ralitsa Venkova – senior expert at RIEW and former student of UF. School students from Sofia had the opportunity to visit the state-of-the-art laboratories of the University of Forestry and learn more about its scientific activity and educational programs.

The celebration concluded with the symbolic release of several doves – representing the Center’s aspiration to conquer new heights in science and technology and to contribute to a cleaner and more beautiful environment.
