For the tenth time, the International Workshop and Summer School on Plasma Physics brought together established and young scientists, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers from Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Japan.
The participants presented and discussed the latest results in the fields of Plasma Physics, Nuclear Fusion, Plasma Modeling and Simulations, Plasma Sources, Plasma Diagnostics, and Plasma Technologies, including their applications in biology, medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection. This year, special emphasis was placed on the development and application of plasma technologies as a final stage of clean technologies – in particular, the elimination of toxic pollutants from water, sludge, and concentrates after reverse osmosis.
As tradition dictates, the event took place in Kiten, with Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” as the main organizer. The co-organizer of this year’s edition was the Center of Competence Clean & Circle.
Researchers from the Clean & Circle Competence Center presented results from their latest studies, conducted within the European project PROMISCES, on plasma treatment for reducing the toxicity of leachates and sludge from municipal solid waste landfills. The research equipment used in these studies was funded by the Operational Programme “Science and Education for Smart Growth” and the EU. The reported research highlights innovative opportunities for the creation of hybrid technologies and the enhancement of existing methods for the elimination and management of toxic pollutants in water, wastewater, waste, and sludge. These activities represent core areas of work within the Clean & Circle Competence Center and the Horizon 2020 project PROMISCES. The successful synergy between European infrastructure, high-tech, and scientific projects was demonstrated in tackling the most challenging aspects of developing and transferring clean technologies.
