In 2024, World Environment Day (June 5) is celebrated under the motto “Our Earth. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” In this context, the Competence Center Clean & Circle dedicated a WEEK to the environment, filled with important events. On June 4, a closing event was held to present the Centers of Excellence and Competence Centers, where Clean & Circle welcomed representatives from the European Commission and businesses in Bulgaria.
Scientists, PhD students, and university students demonstrated scientific equipment in the brand-new laboratories of the newly constructed building of the center. On the same day, the coordinator of Clean & Circle, Prof. Yana Topalova, presented the center’s achievements, which included not only scientific results (170 scientific articles, granted patents, models, and technologies) but also 68 completed contracts with businesses. Clean & Circle offers exceptional opportunities for connecting science with business, developing new clean technologies, and optimizing existing ones in laboratories equipped with the latest instruments, within both distributed and centralized infrastructure.
In this context, the panel on clean technologies included the associated partner of Clean & Circle – Sofia Water AD (part of Veolia) with representative Vesela Stefanova (Manager of the Laboratory Testing Complex), who spoke about the implementation of a joint indicator technology for early COVID virus detection in wastewater.
On June 5, the events dedicated to World Environment Day continued with presentations of eco-biopreneurial projects by students from the Bachelor's program in Bio-management and Sustainable Development. The students presented their business ideas related to clean technologies, including composting facilities, biogas installations, and corresponding management systems. On the same day, students from the Ecology and Environmental Protection program presented their projects for innovative treatment plants for drinking and wastewater in various Bulgarian cities.
