Do you know what PFAS are? These are synthetic chemicals, known as "forever chemicals" because of their persistence in the environment. They are used in a variety of products such as non-stick cookware, water-repellent fabrics, and firefighting foams. The problem is that PFAS are toxic and accumulate in our bodies and the environment, which can lead to serious health issues. The PROMISCES project, and we as part of it, are working on solutions to manage PFAS in our water resources to ensure safe water reuse.
Our team participates in the project through the Competence Center Clean & Circle "Clean Technologies for Sustainable Development – Water, Waste, Energy for a Circular Economy". Within PROMISCES, we collaborate with the Municipal Waste Treatment Enterprise – Sofia to find sustainable solutions for pollution management.

🔬 What do we do?
📌 We work on WP4 and WP5 of the project.
📌 Conduct research focused on innovative treatment of landfill leachate to minimize pollution.
📌 Analyze ten municipal landfills and perform high-throughput analysis.
📌 Test plasma treatment under laboratory conditions to reduce PFAS.
🔎 Our goal?
✔️ Assess the effectiveness of leachate treatment technologies.
✔️ Analyze biological activity during purification.
✔️ Explore ways to extend the lifecycle of sludge and convert it into a useful product.

🔬 We continue researching PFAS toxicity! 🌍♻️
Our team is working hard on developing, testing, and validating new methods to determine the complex toxicity of PFAS and limit their spread in the environment.
📌 What do we do?
✅ Evaluate toxicity using fluorescent methods, measuring the metabolic activity of Escherichia coli and fluorescence intensity.
✅ Study reducing leachate toxicity through plasma treatment methods.
✅ Tests involve different plasma sources to degrade PFAS and reduce their toxic effect.
🌱 Our goal?
✔️ To find effective solutions to remove these “forever chemicals” from contaminated waters.
