On October 8–9, 2022, the 12th edition of the Sofia Science Festival took place at Sofia Tech Park. The Centre of Competence “Clean & Circle” presented its research and innovations to the festival audience with a lecture and an interactive demonstration booth.
Hundreds of visitors stopped by the booth “Compost Under Surveillance”, where they learned more about composting while observing live the microorganisms and insect larvae that drive the process. Children and adults alike left with ready-to-use recipes for home composting, guided by the Centre’s experts. The booth was hosted by Assist. Prof. Ivaylo Yotinov from the Faculty of Biology at Sofia University, together with Assist. Prof. Aleksandrina Kostadinova and Dr. Veneta Stefanova from the University of Forestry.
In the lecture “Plasma – The Superhero”, Assoc. Prof. Jovana Todorova and Assist. Prof. Dr. Plamena Marinova explained how plasma, a gift of nature combined with human knowledge in science and technology, can help us tackle numerous dangerous pollutants for which solutions are still lacking. The researchers introduced the audience to plasma’s ability to remove hazardous contaminants from surfaces, food, and liquids, as well as its healing effects on wounds and damaged tissues. They also shared their work on using plasma for water purification as part of the Promisces project under Horizon 2020 and within the framework of the Centre of Competence “Clean & Circle.” In both projects, the leading partner is Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
