Project

“Clean technologies for sustainable environment – waters, waste, energy for circular economy“ (Clean&Circle) for creation and development of a Centre of Competence

Within Activity 4, "Assessment of the ecological status of test water bodies (water and sediments), analysis and ranking of the impact of pollution sources on the ecological status of water bodies," the planned sub-activities were implemented, resulting in a large set of scientific and applied outcomes. Over the last months of the activity, the team from Sofia University – Faculty of Biology (SU-BF) finalized work on two key results, which are directly oriented toward various users and can now be utilized as ready-to-use products for addressing specific problems:

  • A comprehensive strategy for managing the risk of retention and accumulation of toxic inorganic and organic pollutants in sediments has been developed. Individual parts of this strategy, adapted to specific pollutants, have already been published in two scientific articles:

Yotinov I, Belouhova M, Foteva A, Dinova N, Todorova Y, Schneider I, Topalova Y. (2022) Application of Nanodiamonds in Modelled Bioremediation of Phenol Pollution in River Sediments. Processes 10(3):602. https://doi.org/10.3390/pr10030602

Yotinov, I.; Kirilova, M.; Delcheva, I.; Tagarev, G.; Todorova, Y.; Schneider, I.; Topalova, Y. Modeling of Effect of Pseudomonas aureofaciens AP-9 on Bioremediation of Phenol-Contaminated River Sediments. Processes 2024, 12, 44. https://doi.org/10.3390/pr12010044

The general scheme of the strategy with sequential action algorithms is presented here.

  • An approach for ranking pollutants on different scales (local – specific pollution source, and river sub-basin) has been developed and applied. Two scientific articles describing this approach have been accepted for publication, and it is also detailed in a forthcoming dissertation. As a separate element, a software product has been created – user-friendly and ready for immediate application to assess pollutants, contamination, and related issues. The product is available here and allows working with specific data.

Both developed products will be offered as services in the Service Directory of the Center.
